They were further divided into numerous groups speaking separate languages. The Yankton Nakota occupied a region between the Missouri River and Minnesota. Though buffalo hunters, they also maintained some semi-permanent villages. They were used to white traders coming up the Missouri and gave Lewis and Clark a friendly reception.
