Not only does a built environment map and frame the topological boundaries of the territory of a social group, it also encodes and communicates group-specific pathways and recursive routines and interpersonal orientations characteristic of that group. An architectonic system appropriates and incorporates machines, vehicles, natural formations—indeed anything and everything visually palpable, including individuals. A tree and a machine do not cease to be what they are when so appropriated; rather, they are absorbed into a system of relationships, becoming significative nodes in a relational network.
